Evangelia Diapouli is Assistant Researcher (Researcher C) at the Institute of Nuclear & Radiological Sciences and Technology, Energy & Safety, of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”. She holds a Chemical Engineering Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens (2000), an MSc in Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, USA (2002) and a PhD in Air pollution from the National Technical University of Athens (2008). She has more than 20 years of experience in the study of atmospheric aerosol. Her research activities include the physico-chemical characterization of ambient and indoor particulate pollution, aerosol source apportionment and population and occupational risk assessment. Dr Diapouli has participated in several European and national projects on aerosol characterization, urban air quality and population exposure. She has been actively involved in European initiatives for the development of standard methods for aerosol characterization, including the quantification of carbonaceous species in PM and the adoption of a European harmonized methodology in the application of receptor models for PM source apportionment. Since 2019, she is member of the Management Board of the Hellenic Association for Aerosol Research (HAAR).

Coming from an academic background in aerosols science and engineering of airborne contamination, he oriented in the field of aerosol research by conducting between 1997 and 2000 a PhD thesis on the mechanisms of electrical charging of aerosols including those radioactive. His research has been awarded by the French association for aerosol research ASFERA. Hired at the IRSN in 2001, he continued his research activities particularly in the areas of particle re-suspension, aerosol physics and metrology. He contributed in the writing of a French book on the issue of occupational exposure to airborne nanoparticles in 2007 and a Elsevier book on nano-engineering safety in 2015. He was co-Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the European Aerosol Conference held in Tours 2016 and has been vice-President of the French aerosol research society, ASFERA, since 2018.

His research focuses on the dynamics of combustion-generated carbonaceous aerosols to quantify and eliminate their impacts on climate change and human health, as well as to improve their performance in energy generation and storage applications. Dr. Kelesidis is currently chair of the Aerosol Technology Working Group of the European Aerosol Assembly (EAA; starting September 2023) and vice-chair of the Aerosol Physics Working Group of the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR; starting October 2024). He is also a Program Leader of the International Sooting Flame Workshop (starting July 2022).

In 1996 he joined Aradigm Corporation (California, USA) to develop liquid micro-jet technology for inhalation drug delivery. There, he co-discovered with Prof. A. Gañán-Calvo (University of Sevilla, Spain) the Flow Blurring liquid atomizer. Since joining Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) in 2004 as ICREA Research Professor, his research has focused on electrospray and electrospinning for the manufacturing of nanomaterials; and recently also on COVID transmission in schools. He currently leads the Droplets, intErfaces, and floWs (DEW) lab at URV.
